CANMT Trip: Wichita Falls, Cadillac Ranch & Vega

This was actually the day we were suppose to leave the Hunts. So we went through the whole leaving routine again. This was also going to be our longest stretch of drive on the trip. Our first little stop was going to be Wichita Falls, TX.
Doesn't that just sound like a great place? When I was planning our route, I saw this city name along the freeway and did some research. Apparently there are no longer natural waterfalls. There's a whole story about, but now there's a man-made waterfall. Well now I had to check it out. The waterfall is in Lucy Park and along the Wichita River.

As you can see the Wichita River was very muddy, and so were the falls.

It was actually a little difficult to get to. There isn't parking right next to the falls, so we had to figure out where to park (which wasn't easy with the one-way streets and limited signs). But after going around in circles a few times, we parked and walked to the falls. It was nice, after being in the car for a few hours, to walk around the falls.
After more time in the car, we eventually turned onto the 40W. This started our Route 66 fun. I have always wanted to drive what is left of Route 66, but until that happens, it was fun to see some of the things we did on the small portion we drove on the way home.
Our first stop was Cadillac Ranch (near Amarillo). I was so excited.
We actually drove right past it and had to turn around. It was further from the freeway than I thought it would be. We didn't bring spray paint, so I was hoping that someone left some. Luckily, when we walked up a little boy gave us his can since he was leaving. Melodie has never used spray paint before and we had to keep making sure she didn't point it at herself.

It was so windy. We didn't notice until later, but Melodie had red specks all over her from the paint blowing back. Rocky and I took turns too.

As we were leaving we saw a group traveling in these cars:
That's the way to travel Route 66!
Our next stop along Route 66 was Vega, TX. First we stopped at Magnolia Gas Station. Obviously not in use anymore, it makes for great pictures.
Also in Vega was Dot's Mini Museum and a boot tree. Dot's Mini Museum was actaully a small building with a bunch of Route 66 stuff. Very cluttered, but interesting. The boot tree was exactly what it sounds like.

There's still more of the day left. There was so much to see! Stay tuned.
