CANMT Trip: Frontier Texas!

We stayed the night in Abilene, TX and ate breakfast in our room (we still had food leftover from camping breakfasts).
We spent the morning at Frontier Texas!

The museum tells about life between 1780-1880 in that specific region of Texas. We were the only ones there and this nice elderly man who was a volunteer practically gave us a private tour. We started off in a room where a video with Buck Taylor (Tombstone!) "introduced" us to the 7 spirit guides we'd see in the museum. It was kind of like circle vision.

Then we went into another room where we saw another video that gave a brief history of the time period we'd be learning about.

These are the seven spirit guides we saw in the museum:
Each guide told their story and then there were things in the area that had to do with their experiences and the time the had lived in.
First we saw this life sized buffalo herd.

So, of course, I walked around saying, "Tatonka" the whole time we were in the area. I couldn't help myself. "Dances Wtih Wolves" is the first thing I think about when I see anything that has to do with buffalo.
Then we went to the next area to meet Esihabitu, the first spirit guide.
He was a Camanche leader who tried to encourage peace in the 1860's and 70's. Then we met Cynthia Ann Parker who was captured by Comanches as a child and eventually married a chief. She was the mother of Chief Quanah Parker. Next was J. Wright Mooar who started the buffalo hide business. Randolph Marcy was the next spirit guide. He was a member of the US Army. Unfortunately, his sound wasn't working so we weren't able to hear him talk. Britt Johnson was born a slave but was granted freedom to search for his wife and daughters who had been captured by Indians in 1864. He found them, but then died in another Indian raid. The last one was Elizabeth Clifton who had four husbands killed or disappear.
There were things to do in each area. I only took pictures of a few. This was in the Britt Johnson area:
Shows the different speeds of walking, riding a horse, a wagon and a truck.
Rocky hung out in the Saloon in the Elizabeth Clifton area:
He's wathcing the story of a shooting.

This stagecoach was used in movies including "Hombre" starring Paul Newman and TV shows including "Little House on the Prairie".
The finale was another circle vision type movie that re-created different frontier experiences. Some of them were a little too intense for Melodie, but she would just close her eyes and cover her ears.
We took a few pictures in the store, entrance area and outside.

"Crossing the Catclaw" Bronze sculpture of a cattle drive.

Melodie wanted a picture on the cow hide chair too.
